NY Times responds to Hannity's demand for a retraction, an apology: 'Our answer is no'

The New York Times has stated that it will not retract or apologize for columns critical of Sean Hannity's coverage of the coronavirus pandemic, despite legal threats from Hannity's attorney. The Times' legal counsel, David E. McCraw, responded to the attorney's request for an apology and retraction, asserting that the columns are accurate, constitute a protected opinion, and do not imply what Hannity alleges. Hannity's attorney, Charles Harder, had sent a letter calling for a public retraction and apology from the Times. The main point of contention is a column by Ginia Bellafante, which focused on a late bar owner named Joe Joyce who contracted the coronavirus after a cruise to Spain. The column quoted Hannity, who had made statements suggesting the virus was being used as a political tool against Trump.


It is unclear if Joyce contracted the virus in Spain, but his daughter mentioned that he watched Fox News and believed the virus was under control. Hannity has criticized the column, claiming it was a smear and an accusation of murder against him. Harder's letter accused the Times of disregarding the truth and acting with malice in mischaracterizing Hannity's coverage. He argued that Hannity had provided truthful coverage of the coronavirus and that the remarks attributed to him were made after Joyce had already embarked on his cruise. The dispute between Hannity and the New York Times highlights the differing perspectives on the media's coverage of the pandemic and the responsibility of news organizations in reporting accurate information.
