Anthea Turner health: Who Dares Wins star was left 'shocked' after a scan revealed the condition

Anthea Turner, aged 59, is set to participate in the challenging reality show SAS: Who Dares Wins, airing on Channel 4. Her decision to join the show is even more remarkable considering she was diagnosed with a bone condition a few years ago. Turner is a seasoned television presenter known for her work on popular programs such as Top of the Pops and Blue Peter in the early 1990s. She will be appearing in the celebrity edition of SAS: Who Dares Wins, where contestants face grueling challenges inspired by SAS recruitment, testing their resilience in harsh environments.

Anthea's choice to take part in the celebrity version of the show is particularly admirable considering her health condition. In an article she wrote for the Daily Mail last year, she revealed her surprise upon learning that she had osteopenia after undergoing a scan. Osteopenia is a condition that occurs before osteoporosis and is characterized by lower bone density compared to the average for one's age, but not low enough to be classified as osteoporosis. While women are more likely to have low bone density, it is no longer considered solely a women's condition.

It's important to note that not everyone with osteopenia will develop osteoporosis. Whether it progresses depends on various factors, including lifestyle choices. Taking steps to maintain healthy bones can reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis. One such step is taking vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the absorption of calcium, which is essential for strong bones and teeth. By ensuring an adequate intake of vitamin D, one can support bone health.

Additionally, avoiding or quitting smoking is recommended to prevent osteoporosis. Smoking has been found to slow down the cells responsible for bone formation in the body. In women, smoking can also increase the likelihood of experiencing menopause at an earlier age. By addressing lifestyle factors and adopting measures to support bone health, individuals can reduce the risk of osteoporosis and maintain healthier bones.
