Marsden rose to prominence for his portrayal of Cyclops in the X-Men film series (2000–2014) and gained further recognition for his performances in The Notebook (2004), Superman Returns (2006), Hairspray (2007), Enchanted (2007), 27 Dresses (2008), and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013). Additionally, he portrayed John F. Kennedy in The Butler (2013) and took on the role of Tom Wachowski in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series (2020–present).  

Marsden starred in HBO’s sci-fi series Westworld from 2016 to 2022 and appeared in Netflix’s black comedy Dead to Me (2019–2022), earning a nomination for a Critics' Choice Television Award. He also made guest appearances in the sitcoms Modern Family (2011) and 30 Rock (2012–2013). In 2023, he played a fictionalized version of himself in the mockumentary series Jury Duty, a performance that earned him nominations for a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award. Most recently, Marsden starred in the Hulu thriller series Paradise (2025).

James Marsden began his acting career with a role in The Nanny as Eddie, Margaret Sheffield's boyfriend. He later starred in the Canadian series Boogies Diner and made guest appearances on shows like Saved by the Bell: The New Class and Party of Five. He played a main role in Second Noah and auditioned for major films, though he lost roles to Edward Norton and Ryan Phillippe. Marsden starred in Disturbing Behavior alongside Katie Holmes and Gossip with Kate Hudson. He also had a significant role in Ally McBeal during its fifth season, where he showcased his singing talent.  

Marsden gained widespread recognition as Cyclops in the X-Men film series. He later played Richard White in Superman Returns, which led to a reduced role in X-Men: The Last Stand due to scheduling conflicts. His portrayal of Cyclops earned him a Blockbuster Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2014, he made a brief return as Cyclops in X-Men: Days of Future Past.  

His career expanded with roles in popular comedies. In The Notebook (2004), he played Lon Hammond, Jr., the love rival of Ryan Gosling’s character. Marsden starred in Hairspray (2007) as Corny Collins and in Enchanted (2007) as Prince Edward, both of which featured his singing. Independent Films and Television Success (2012–Present)  

From 2012 to 2013, Marsden played Criss Chros in 30 Rock, the boyfriend-turned-husband of Liz Lemon. He took on roles in independent films like Robot & Frank, Bachelorette, and As Cool as I Am. In 2013, he starred in 2 Guns with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, as well as The Butler, where he portrayed John F. Kennedy. He also played Jack Lime in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and starred in The Best of Me (2014).  

Marsden gained further recognition as Teddy Flood, a sentient android, in HBO’s Westworld. He played Steve Wood in Netflix’s Dead to Me before taking on a new role as Ben Wood in later seasons. In 2020, he starred in Sonic the Hedgehog and later reprised the role in its 2022 sequel. That same year, he played Phil Crane in FX’s Mrs. America and voiced Hitch Trailblazer in My Little Pony: A New Generation. He also reprised his role as Prince Edward in Disenchanted (2022).
