Calum Lowden trained as a ballet dancer from a young age at the Manor School of Ballet in Edinburgh, later continuing his training at the English National Ballet School and the Royal Ballet School in London before joining the Royal Swedish Ballet. His brother Jack also attended classes at the Manor School of Ballet but soon discovered that acting suited him better. Although he initially dreamed of becoming a footballer, his interest shifted toward performance.

At the age of ten, Jack’s parents enrolled him in the Scottish Youth Theatre in Edinburgh, where he began developing his passion for acting. Two years later, he appeared as John in a Peter Pan pantomime at the King’s Theatre, Edinburgh. Lowden is also attached to Duncan Jones’ forthcoming film Rogue Trooper.

In Slow Horses, Lowden plays River Cartwright, a talented MI5 agent whose career takes a sharp downturn after a humiliating mistake during a high-profile training exercise lands him in Slough House, the department for disgraced and sidelined agents. The series itself, created by Will Smith and adapted from Mick Herron’s Slough House novels, is a British spy thriller that follows these misfit operatives as they work under the abrasive yet brilliant leadership of Jackson Lamb, portrayed by Gary Oldman.
