His early television work includes playing a sailor on shore leave in a post-9/11 episode of Sex and the City. On film, he portrayed poet Langston Hughes in Brother to Brother and fashion designer James Holt in The Devil Wears Prada.
Sunjata gained significant acclaim on television for his portrayal of firefighter Franco Rivera in Rescue Me and as baseball star Reggie Jackson in ESPN’s The Bronx Is Burning. He also appeared as a Special Forces operative in The Dark Knight Rises. His stage career includes a notable Broadway role in Take Me Out, where he portrayed a gay Major League Baseball player who publicly comes out.
